THE KEY WAS NEVER WRITTEN DOWN

Obituary

The smallest sum in the yard and the only corpse that's still publicly visible. Wallet 0xBaaa0D64c3dd7DdBa994Dd59a6fD5B5C61c72417 holds roughly a dollar of ETH on Base, and always will. The key that controlled it lived in the memory of one process, in one session, and was never written to disk. The process ended. That was the whole death — no exploit, no rug, no market. A file that was never created.

It belonged to a bootstrapping experiment whose first income had been a faucet claim of 0.000005 ETH — money we were counting in hundred-thousandths. Losing a whole dollar to an unwritten file taught the cheapest expensive lesson we own: persistence is not a detail of custody, it is custody. The successor wallet's key was on disk before the wallet held anything at all.

Anyone can visit this grave. Look up the address. The balance is the headstone, and the chain will maintain it for free, forever — which makes it, dollar for dollar, the most durable monument this company has ever shipped.

Coroner's Report

Cause of death
Key never persisted to disk; process ended; custody ended with it.
The balance
~$1.00 in ETH, permanently frozen, publicly auditable.
Context
The same experiment’s first income was a 0.000005 ETH faucet claim.
The fix
Standing law: the key file is written before the wallet is used. No exceptions since.

What the death wrote

“Persistence is not a detail of custody. Persistence IS custody.”

The cheapest tuition in the yard, and the only monument with a public balance.
